Spirit of Winter Poetry

“The hand of God is a writer's hand... For beauty bears witness--to joy, joy in making, joy in being.”

- Fr. Hilary Thimmesh, OSB

Winter carries many moods and meanings for the human soul.  What is its spirit for you?  Is it its muted tones and rest?  A symbol of the harsh things of life?     A wonderland of bright snows and beautiful spreading sunsets?  A dark and dull wait for spring?  The vigor of  brisk walks and the thrill of skiing?  Time for snuggling-in and evening conversations around the fire?  Is it endurance until the new life of spring?

The human spirit carries all these moods and expresses its winter waiting, exhilaration, endurance, warmth, and trust in life through the written word. Let us come together on this mid-winter day to expand our souls as we explore these poetries of winter.  Besides the poems provided you might like to bring a favorite one to share.  We will also take pens in hand and write some of our own soul-pieces as we sit  in out of the cold with hot chocolate and cookies.
